Come summer and you will find groups of people chatting and gulping down glasses of thandai at many street corners of Agra.

Thandai is a popular milk based drink which is prepared mainly during Holi. It is a typical north Indian summer time soft drink that can not only cool down your body temperature but also sharpen your wits.

According to MANAK HINDI KOSH and HINDI SHABD SAGAR Thandai is that medicine or mixture by which body and brain of a human being become cool. Hindi Standered Dictionary defines Thandai as that concoction of herbs and spices which rejuvenates and stimulates the mind and body. In hot sunny days, it is prepared as Sharbat i.e. syrup with the the use of milk, almond, pistachio, black peper, aniseed, cardamom, rose petals, raisin, cashew nuts saffron, poppy seeds as well as seeds of cucumber, musk melon and water melon. For sweetness tagar, a type of sugur is also added to it.

The Ayurved system of medicine recommends Thandai in summer for its many positive qualities. It is used as medicine with the addition of Brahmi, Kasni and Liquorices etc. As a main gradient, milk is very good for decreasing the pitta (fire elements specially for the pitta predominant constitutions) in the body. Besides having an element of Calcium (for the bones) it is also a source of B12 which is mostly deficient in the vegetarian diet. According to Ayurveda, rose flower is also excellent for decreasing the element of fire in the body which, under the effect of immense heat, becomes imbalanced. Cashew nuts are rich in protein, fats, Phosphorous and vitamin B (good for nervous ailments) Poppy seeds are effective in quenching thirst in the heat and are also good for fever, irritation and inflammation of the stomach. Green cardamoms reduce the air (vata)and water (kapha)elements in the body.

Generally in summer the vataor air element is unbalanced in the body, as a result of which one suffers from dizziness and palpitation which is because of the effect of too much heat on the body. It increase the appetite and soothes the mucous membranes.Peppers are a source of carotene and should be used carefully. If consumed in large quantities, they could prove to be irritations. In the ancient texts, saffron has reference as a tonic for liver disorders.Almonds, the king of nuts, has copper which helps in the enhanced assimilation of iron. They should be eaten without he skin as that has a constipating effect. 5-10 almonds a day are good for the nervous system.

In today's world however it is rapidly being replaced by Cola drinks, tea, coffee and others of drinks. According to Ayurvedic Scholars, some makers of Thandai are compromising with the basic contents adding the pettha seeds and sugar in place of almond and tagar simultaneously. So the popularity of Thandai get affected. It is falling down day-by-day. In the towns and villages of India, the Thandai is very fascinating due to it's taste and medication properties.
